The reason you don't have underbrush is either a.) The trees suck up all the water b.) The trees shade out the competition or c.) The prior owner regularly removed it. Also, water tends to pool on hardscape because it doesn't soak in.you'd need some sort of drainage system. (There is a reason there are like five or six species of trees people constantly put into urban sidewalks.they are the ones with the best chance of surviving with pavement around their roots) All this is if the person putting in the hardscape manages to put it in without damaging the roots. If you pave around the trees, you drastically reduce the amount of water (and oxygen) the roots get. Hardscape would be slightly trickier then it sounds. They may be in a wetter climate.but then, grass can be full of bugs, to. I haven't noticed them being particularly full of bugs, but I imagine that depends on your climate. Yes, pine needles are perfectly safe for people and dogs to walk on. But I live in an urban environment where I get sick of hardscape and see the alternative as unique and special. Personally, I love the unique wooded look of a carpet of pine needles. Its modern, updated and can add the privacy you will want in a newer interesting way. Instead I would say to update it and put in a vertical type fence. maybe with some nice boxwoods here and there. A boulder water fountain near by the back porch area. I see some river rocks along edging instead of the lava rocks, just to modernize it a bit. My husband and I love our hammock, so a little pagoda with a hammock addition. If you don't want to deal with the leaves, you might want to ask yourself how fancy you are going to want to go. Sand pit? Do you have dogs? With a yard that size, I see you have plenty of leaves do you have any ride on equipment to pick up those leaves or a leave blower and are you willing to deal with them. Perhaps a in ground wading pool about ankle deep. I don't know if you have kids or what kind of things you and your partner like doing, but I think some questions you should ask yourself is how much work are you willing to put into maintaining and keeping up the looks of the yard? What would you like using the yard for? Do you like entertaining? if you have kids, maybe a little play area. I don't like them personally, but I do have to admit that they are great in certain areas. Arborvitaes are a popular choice for fast growing, height, dense, privacy type plants. Your in Michigan? You definitely need a fireplace area. In either case you could place a couple of flag stones in the bed by the gate for access. The other would be to keep your steps and lay a dry laid stone patio at ground level. One way would be to redo the steps and build a wider area at the height of the second or third step breaking up the steps into two sections. You could do this a couple of ways depending on your budget. The shape allows you to see the plantings better from inside. I also like how the beds curve out away from the house on either end and invite you to the front door. Instead of chairs it could be a simple bench set on a smaller area of pea gravel. I think this would work on a smaller scale. In this house they raised the bottom of the Steps into a small patio with a seating area to the side. I love the storybook cottage feel of your asymmetrical roofline and windows and think you should play on the asymmetry. This house has a couple ideas that might work for you. The light should be larger and more interesting in shape.I would add rhodedendrums or other evergreen in addition to to the hydrangeas for more interest year round. The trellis stands out more than any of tjing even the door right now. Replace the mailbox, house numbers, and light all in black so they pop against the light color of the house. Paint the door and storm door a bright color that you like since your house is neutral have fun with the color choice be a bit daring. I cant really discuss your experts thoughts. I would not have pine overhanging the house. Ĭant really speak to removal.nor the lay of the land. It does NOT sound like a good place for a fire ring. including the most invasive weed in the world. with the lack of water from the giant competitors. dont go removing them all just for the heck of it.
